چکیده
In addition to landscape changes, urbanization also brings about changes in environmental factors that can affect wildlife. Despite the common referral published literature multiple such as light and noise pollution, there is a gap knowledge their combined impact. We developed multidimensional framework assess effect of (light, noise, temperature) on life-history traits breeding success Barn Swallows (Hirundo rustica) across rural urban gradients four locations spanning over 2500 km from North South China. Over single season, we measured these nearby nests quantified 1 km2 radius. then analysed relationships between through principal component analysis conducted spatially explicit linear-mixed effects models success. were particularly interested understanding whether how able adapt conditions associated with urbanization. The results show significant variation exposure experienced by These are complex due behavioural responses ameliorating potential negative selecting nesting sites minimize factors. However, urbanization, factors, laying date clutch size pervasive. Still, impact was, at least our sample, negligible, suggesting extremely adaptable wide range features.

Albinism and phenotype of barn swallows (Hirundo rustica) from Chernobyl.
The effects of mutation on phenotypic expression are supposed to be mainly deleterious because mutations disrupt the expression of genes that function relatively well under current environmental conditions. Thus, mutations are assumed to give rise to deviant phenotypes that are generally selected against. Radioactive contamination in the Chernobyl region of Ukraine is associated with a signific...
متن کاملExperimental tail shortening in Barn Swallows ( Hirundo rustica ) affects haematocrit
1. Recent studies in Scotland suggest that the outermost tail feathers of Barn Swallows ( Hirundo rustica Linnaeus) may be around 10–12 mm longer than the aerodynamic optimum, with sexual selection for long tails accounting for this extra length. 2. To test this hypothesis, we shortened the outermost tail feathers in male and female Barn Swallows in southern Spain by cutting 1, 11 or 21 mm from...
متن کاملColour composition of nest lining feathers affects hatching success of barn swallows, Hirundo rustica (Passeriformes: Hirundinidae)
Many bird species use feathers as lining material, and its functionality has traditionally been linked to nest insulation. However, nest lining feathers may also influence nest detection by predators, differentially affect reproductive investment of mates in a post-mating sexual selection process, and affect the bacterial community of the nest environment. Most of these functions of nest lining...
